But, what about their unborn child before they found out? Can Ecstasy (MDMA) negatively affect a fetus in the very early stages of development? To find out, researchers at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Lukes Medical Center in Chicago studied 21-day-old rat pups who were exposed to Ecstasy during a period corresponding to the first trimester of human pregnancy. Dr. Jack W. Lipton and colleagues injected eight pregnant rats twice daily with MDMA from day 14 through day 20 of pregnancy, a period corresponding to the first three months of human fetal development. The scientists injected saline twice daily during the same period to another eight pregnant control rats. The investigators then examined the brain tissue of the rat pups when they were 21 days old, which is equivalent to a two- to six-year-old child. Drastic Changes Observed Our most striking finding was that 21-day-old ecstasy-exposed pups had a 502-percent increase in the number of dopamine neuron fibers in the frontal cortex compared with control animals, said Dr. Lipton. Abnormal or overly numerous connections in the frontal cortex may result in aberrant signaling there, possibly resulting in abnormal behavior. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that carries messages between nerve cells and plays a role in a number of different motivated behaviors such as sex, eating, and drug use. Important functions such as attention, planning, and impulse control are associated with the brains frontal cortex. Do You Know How Your Brain Is While on MDMA? Gender Differences in Vulnerability? The study also revealed smaller but similar in dopamine fibers in the brain area involved in locomotion and reward and the primary site of action of rewarding stimuli, the nucleus accumbens. Ecstasy-exposed pups also showed modest decreases in dopamine metabolism in brain structures that play key roles in reward, addiction, learning, and movement. There also was a reduction in serotonin metabolism. Serotonin also is a brain chemical that helps to regulate mood, sleep, and appetite, Lipton reported. Interestingly, the researchers also found gender differences from Ecstasy exposure. While reductions in dopamine and serotonin metabolism were observed in the nucleus accumbens of males, these same effects were not seen in female pups. Behavioral Changes Seen The Chicago study also revealed behavioral changes in the animals. When the Ecstasy-exposed pups were placed in a new environment away from their littermates, they spent significantly more time exploring, signifying they did not adjust as easily to the new environment as the control animals, the authors said. Our findings show that exposing rats to Ecstasy at a time of prenatal development that correlates with the first trimester in humans may result in lasting changes in brain chemistry and behavior, said Dr. Lipton. Our findings also suggest that MDMA exposure may result in hyperactivity or deficits in attention or learning. Further research is needed to learn more about the effects of prenatal exposure to this drug. The study, funded in part by the National Institute on Drug Abuse. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald shows that materialism can ruin the chance at true love. Gatsby tries to make Daisy love him through his money and excessive spending on nonessential things. When him and Daisy first reconnect their relationship, he brings her over to his house to show off the clothes in his closet: â€Å"He took out a pile of shirts and began throwing them, one by one, before us, shirts of sheer linen and thick silk and fine flannel, which lost their folds as they fell and covered the table in many-colored disarray. While we admired he brought more and the soft rich heap mounted higher — shirts with stripes and scrolls and plaids in coral and apple-green and lavender and faint orange, and monograms of Indian blue. Suddenly, with a strained sound, Daisy bent her head into the shirts and began to cry stormily† (Fitzgerald 92). Gatsby is throwing his shirts everywhere to show that he is full of money and that they don’t mean much to him, acting like it doesn’t matter if they get ruined. He does this to show that his money is plentiful and he tries to make Daisy want to be with him and his rich lifestyle. Daisy starts to cry because she is overwhelmed with his prosperity and shows how she starts to love him through his riches. Another way Gatsby tries to show off his wealth is by throwing a party and inviting Daisy and Tom, but at the end of the party she seemed apathetic. Gatsby noticed her weariness and was concerned, so he confided in Nick: â€Å"‘She didn’t like it,’ he insisted. ‘She didn’t have a good time. ’ He was silent, and I guessed at his unutterable depression. ‘I feel far away from her,’ he said. ‘It’s hard to make her understand’† (Fitzgerald 109). Gatsby implies that he threw the party so that she would enjoy herself and want to come back to him. He tries to make his life seem very extravagant because he knows that it is what she looks for in a lover. Gatsby becomes unhappy because she was unhappy with his party; he feels that he must show off his money just to get Daisy to fall for him. Gatsby’s secret is revealed finally during a trip to the city: he and Tom get into an argument and Tom discloses the truth. Gatsby’s secret business of drug deals was the basis of his affluence. Daisy is shocked and doesn’t know what to do as Gatsby tries to deny the facts: â€Å"It passed, and he began to talk excitedly to Daisy, denying everything, defending his name against accusations that had not been made. But with every word she was drawing further and further into herself, so he gave that up, and only the dead dream fought on as the afternoon slipped away, trying to touch what was no longer tangible, struggling unhappily, undespairingly, toward that lost voice across the room† (Fitzgerald 134). Daisy becomes reluctant to the fact that it was a fake fortune while Gatsby tries to cover up his lies. Although Daisy acted like she was in love with Gatsby before the incident, her feelings quickly faded as she realizes the truth. The money was the basis of their relationship and it was what held them together. This proves how their relationship was based off of money and how Daisy immediately forgot about how â€Å"in love† they were. This motif of materialism is explored because it shows how love can’t be genuine if it is based off of inanimate objects and money-oriented things. Myrtle is materialistic when she goes for the men with money and pretends to be in love with them. In New York City with Tom and Nick, Myrtle explains to her friends how she felt about her new marriage with George and her realizations: â€Å"I married him because I thought he was a gentleman†¦I thought he knew something about breeding, but he wasn’t fit to lick my shoe† (Fitzgerald 34). Myrtle married him because she thought he came from a wealthy family, breeded, or born, into money. When she found out he wasn’t rich, she knew she had made a mistake in marrying him. Myrtle is materialistic because she didn’t marry George for love, but for wealth. Myrtle tells about the day she found out he wasn’t rich and admits to her regrets in marrying him. Myrtle was not expecting it: â€Å"The only crazy I was was when I married him. I knew right away I made a mistake. He borrowed somebody’s best suit to get married in, and never even told me about it, and the man came after it one day when he was out† (Fitzgerald 35). Myrtle finds out that George had borrowed someone’s suit to use during their wedding because he couldn’t afford one on his own. This shows the love that George has for Myrtle and how he goes far to make sure she gets the best wedding ever. It also shows how Myrtle doesn’t love him, and how was judging him for borrowing a suit. Myrtle is materialistic because she got upset over a suit being borrowed and not purchased for their wedding. Myrtle and Tom’s relationship is materialistic. While in NYC, Myrtle gets Tom to buy her a dog off the streets: â€Å"I want to get one of those dogs†¦I want to get one for the apartment. They’re nice to have—a dog† (Fitzgerald 27). Myrtle asks for a dog and gets one because of Tom’s wealth and uses it to her advantage. Myrtle takes Tom’s money for granted and pursues a relationship with him because she knows he is rich. Her materialism is shown through her fake relationships with Tom and George; it reveals that she only has relationships with wealthy men and she was not really â€Å"in love† with either of the two men. Her materialistic needs clashed with her path to finding love. This motif of love is explored because it shows how people in this world use others for their money. In The Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald shows that a materialistic mindset will corrupt the chance at true love. Gatsby tried to get Daisy to love him again by showing off his money and failed because he didn’t put his heart and self into their relationship. Myrtle mistakenly married a man whom she thought was wealthy and turned out he was poor. She quickly regretted their marriage and had an affair with Tom Buchanan, a well known rich man. Fitzgerald demonstrates how none of these relationships worked out because of the materialistic ways of these characters. This motif is explored because it proves how true love isn’t real with fake values. True love should be two people who love each other unconditionally and is not based on money-oriented things. First it should be made known that most organizations are a way of fitting in with people of similar interests, views, or goals. Most organization, no matter how democratic, will always have some kind of leader over the rest. In instances of many leaders one will always be above the rest. These leaders will have more power, influence, and respect then the others. No matter how erratic their decisions are, their are always people that will follow or risk of being different, ultimately not fitting in. The fear of loneliness or rejection will always clump together the masses. Organizations are a way of showing or pretending to be like others as an effort to fit in or risk being one's true self for fearing to be rejected by society. In the novel A Separate Peace Finny and Gene's relationship shows most if not all the signs of a organization. Finny seems as in control as any leader would be in a organization. He even takes the first step of starting it by saying, "He and Gene are best of friends now." This statement confirms that he initiated the friendship. As a normal person Gene was sure at first if he would accept Finny's friendship, but after evaluating he's benefits as part of the population he accepts the friendship. Gene seemed to have tested Finny's qualities before offering his friendship to see if Finny was good enough by seeing if he was willing to jump from a tree. This would show Finny if he was willing to trust him and if he would do things that Finny wanted him to. The SAT Math test will be different from any other math test you’ve taken. You need to work with the real material to get used to the pacing and style of this unique test. In this short guide, I’ll show you where to find official SAT Math practice tests and questions, and go over what materials to avoid. Best SAT Math Practice Tests, Free and Official All of the following SAT Math tests are completely free. We've gathered together all of them in one place for your convenience. There are currently 10 official practice tests. You can download them here or take them online at Khan Academy (see next section for more details). This feature includes30 calculator questionsand18 no-calculator questions. These are all different from those in the 10 practice tests above, so if you'd like more SAT Math practice, this is a great resource to use. The only drawback to these online SAT Math questions is thatthey're not given in a practice test format- rather, you'll be shown the correct answer after every question. Nevertheless, the quality of these questions is unbeatable. Additional SAT Math Materials In general, I recommend against any SAT Math practice tests that were not written by the College Boardas it won’t be realistic practice.You want to use real practice materials so that you can ensure you’re taking tests that reflect the actual content and difficulty of the SAT. If you take practices tests made by other companies, they might be more or less difficult and might not include all the content on the actual SAT Math section. That said,unofficial tests can still be great for practicing math skills- just not for practicing SAT-style questions. SATMath, more than any other section on the test, is based on knowledge, so having plenty of materials to practice the different math skills required is important (and poor or inaccurate formatting doesn't always matter as much). How to Use SAT Math Practice Tests Effectively: 4 Tips Since you have a limited number of full-length SAT practice tests (with a total of 10 Math practice tests), each one is a precious commodity. You need to make sure you get the most out of each one. Here are my top four tips to best use your SAT Math practice tests: Tip 1:Take Full-Length Practice Tests Under Realistic Testing Conditions Take each full-length SAT practice test in one sitting with accurate timing and realistic testing conditions. That means sitting for about four hours (if you're including the Essay in your practice). Only allow yourself the prescribed time per section; the time allowed is listed at the beginning of each section. Use a watch to time yourself. You need to get used to the timing of the SAT and learn to pace yourself.Don’t give yourself any extra time on a section.If you do, you might be able to answer extra questions and therefore artificially inflate your score. Remember, you want these practice tests to be reliable indicators of your real SAT score, so no cheating! I recommend taking each official SAT practice test in one sitting (in other words, don't sit for the Math tests one day and then taking the Reading and Writing tests another day).The SAT is a marathon, and you won’t be fully prepared for it if you don’t take the practice tests in one go. If you don’t have time to take each of the official practices tests in one sitting (one sitting will be about four hours per test), then you can split the sections over multiple days, but make sure you take at least one full section each day (e.g., you complete the whole Math No Calculator section). NOTE:Realistic testing conditions means obeying all test rules. On the SAT Math section, be sure to only use your calculator on the calculator-permitted Math section (section 4)- and do not use your calculator on the No Calculator section (section 3). You need to get used to doing mental math! Don’t cheat in your practice or you won’t be prepared the day of the SAT. Use a watch, not a phone! Tip 2: Review Your Practice My second tip is toreview your practice tests!When you finish, score your practice test.Then, look at the in-depth answer explanations for every question you got wrong. Try to figure out where you went wrong.Do not skip this step! If you do, you're not going to learn from your errors, and you'll continue making them. Spend at least an hour reviewing your SAT practice tests (or at least 15 minutes per section). While it might seem like a lot of study time wasted, I promise it’s not. It’s the most valuable time spent because it’s the time where you’ll learn from your mistakes. If you don’t have a lot of study time, I recommend taking two SAT practice tests with detailed review, and then at least four SAT Math practice tests with no review. Tip 3: Practice Skills Between Tests Some students see the improvement they want by simply taking practice tests and familiarizing themselves with the pace and style of the SAT. However, most students need to review math concepts that they forgot, never learned, or never quite mastered. In-between practice tests, I highly recommend that youread our individual SAT Math content guides. These guides address the specific content areas (i.e., Coordinate Geometry, Trigonometry, Systems of Equations, etc.) that you need to master to do well on SAT Math. After taking your first practice test, see whether you can figure out why you got thosemath questions wrong.Did you skip a step? Did you misread the question? Or did you not know the content needed to solve a question? If you didn't know how to solve a question, then you need to review that content! Tip 4: Get Help If You Need It If you’re not improving with each practice test, look for extra help: consider supplementing the SAT practice tests with a tutor, class, book (such as the ones above) or program.While some people might be able to learn from their mistakes on practice tests through self-study, most need outside help to identify their weaknesses and to help them improve. Whatever prep you choose, know that a good prep program should be personalized to your specific needs,focusing on your area of weakness while not wasting your time covering topics you’ve already mastered.
